The aim of the BGID is to support sustainable groundwater development and management for poverty reduction. At present our focus is on Africa, where many rural communities still don’t have access to reliable supplies of safe water. We carry activities supporting hydrogeologists throughout Africa by:
- Making existing and new groundwater knowledge more widely and easily accessible.
- Connecting people: increasing networking and experience sharing
- Supporting groundwater training
- Advocacy, of the role of groundwater and hydrogeologists in reducing poverty.
The BGID works closely with the IAH Regional Vice President for Sub Saharan Africa. The Network is named in memory of the internationally renowned Irish hydrogeologist David Burdon, who had a longtime interest and work in developing countries, and IAH operates a fund in his name to support these activities.
In 2013, the Network established a strategy for strengthening its existing partnerships and building new ones to help achieve this overall aim. At present our focus is on sub-Saharan Africa, where many rural communities still do not have access to adequate and reliable supplies of safe water . The Burdon Network works closely with the IAH Regional Vice President for Sub Saharan Africa in his role of promoting IAH as an international groundwater knowledge base contributing to sustainable groundwater management and development in the region. We support hydrogeologists in developing countries in their own work. The Network is named in memory of the internationally renowned Irish hydrogeologist David Burdon, who had a longtime interest and work in developing countries, and IAH operates a fund in his name to support these activities.
